I-D Breaking and Defending
To deactivate ("bring down" or "break") a held spell, talisman, untriggered potion, magic item, or totemic contract you must satisfy the following criteria:
(Remember guys, if it is an instant spell or triggered potion you cannot even try to deactivate it. And, if it is a held spell or talisman that you cast, you can deactivate it at any time without a Contest.)
I-D.1 Before The Contest
Before you can attempt to deactivate a gizmo or spell created by another mage, you must comply with the procedures for bringing down that type of magic.
I-D.1.1 Before you may attempt to break a Held Spell or a Totemic Contract you must:
- Know what spell or contract you want to break.
- Be within the combat zone (physically or astrally); of the target character of the spell or contract OR of the caster.
- Have the mental discipline Sledgehammer OR a talisman or item which allows you to use a Sledgehammer-like ability.
I-D.1.2 Before you may attempt to break a Talisman you must:
- Know what talisman you want to break.
- Be within the combat zone (physically or astrally); of the talisman OR the talisman's creator.
- Have the mental discipline Sledgehammer OR a talisman or item which allows you to use a Sledgehammer-like ability.
I-D.1.3 Before you may attempt to break an Untriggered Potion or Magic Item you must:
- Know what magic item or potion you want to break.
- Be within the combat zone (physically or astrally); of the magic item or potion.
- Have the mental discipline Sledgehammer OR a talisman or item which allows you to use a Sledgehammer-like ability.
I-D.2 The Announcement
When the above criteria are met you must announce your intent to contest the target spell, talisman, untriggered potion, magic item, or totemic contract. To do so you must announce to the proper party (i.e. character or God).
I-D.2.1 To contest a Held Spell:
- Announce to the target character of the spell OR the caster of the spell OR God(when contesting in astral only).
I-D.2.2 To contest a Talisman:
- Announce to the holder of the talisman OR the creator of the talisman OR God(when contesting in astral only).
I-D.2.3 To contest an Untriggered Potion or Magic Item:
- Announce to the holder of the magic item or potion OR God (when contesting in astral only).
I-D.2.4 To contest a Totemic Contract:
- Announce to the target character of the contract OR the caster of the contract (usually the same as the target) OR God(when contesting in astral only) OR the patron spirit of the contract (God will suffice).
I-D.3 The Contest
The procedure for breaking a held spell, talisman, magic item, untriggered potion, or totemic contract is as follows:
- Announce your attempt to contest the spell/talisman/potion/item/ contract to the appropriate party.
- Bid from your Psyche Pool verses the Force of the spell/talisman/potion/item/contract.
- Bidding concludes when the spell/talisman/potion/item contract is defeated OR when the initiator of the contest withdraws.
The initiator of the contest may withdraw from the bidding at any time, although any Psyche bid by them is spent. If the Force is not beaten, the spell/talisman/potion/item/contract is not brought down, although its Force will be reduced by how much was bid in its defense. A Psyche bidding to attempt to break a spell, talisman, untriggered potion, magic item or totemic contract can be initiated at any time the criteria are met except during combat.
To defend a spell, talisman, untriggered potion, magic item or totemic contract, use the Force listed on the pink spell card to bid against the contester's Psyche bids. You may use the discipline Augment Spell Forces to add to the spell or talisman's Force during the bidding if you are defending a spell or talisman that you are maintaining. You may not use Augment Spell Forces to augment the Force of a spell or talisman that you did not cast. Augment Spell Forces may not be used to augment the force of a potion, magic item or totemic contract.
