Guidelines for the Creation of Magical Protections

Since an overwhelming number of the spells players want to write are magical protections we've devoted an entire volume to the subject. What are magical protections you ask? And why are they so desired? Well, let me enlighten you, "Magical Protections" are spells and gizmos which prevent specific kinds of physical and magical attacks from affecting your character. Neat, huh.
When creating a magical protection you need to state what you are protecting against. For simplicity's sake we've created several catergories of things that can be protected against. This method allows you to create one protection against a group of similar objects instead of having to create a separate protection against every possible weapon variation.

A. Verses Physical Weapons

Physical weapons should be pretty familiar to you... guns, swords, fists, teeth. Any physical object or body part which can be used to cause harm is defined as a physical weapon. (Hey, put down that chair leg!) Protections verses physical weapons are primarily for use in combat, although it is conceivable that some of them may be useful in non-combat circumstances as well. Physical weapons come in several different types and shapes, you may have a specific protection against each type or a single magical protection can protect you against them all, but that will be correspondingly more expensive to cast and maintain. Your magical protection must define what kinds of physical weapons it protects against. And remember, the more the spell protects against, the more complicated and costly it will be.

    1. Normal Weapons
Normal weapons are just that - no mystical powers, no point bonuses, no cool glowing runes - just plain old normal weapons. Normal weapons have no magical qualities.

    2. Supernatural Weapons
Supernatural weapons are the body parts or magical emanations of supernatural creatures. Vampires, shapeshifters, ghouls, immortals, were-badgers, and unicorns are all supernatural creatures. Humans are not. In general, a supernatural creature will have an ability card which states that they do supernatural damage in combat.

    3. Enchanted Weapons
An enchanted weapon is a normal item which has been imbued with magical energies by a mage. (Note: An emanation -such as fire- from an enchanted weapon is either normal or supernatural.)

B. Verses Magical Effects

There are many many many different kinds of spells and a single magical protection will not protect you from them all. Your magical protection must define what kinds of magic it protects against. And remember, the more the spell protects against, the more complicated and costly it will be.
