Current Lord of House AureolusCharacter Concept
Sabine is a very sensitive being. Her grace and aesthetic sense is legendary in elite artistic circles around the world. An invitation to one of her salons is a coupe for any aspiring vampiric socialite. Throughout her history Sabine has dedicated herself and her influence to the betterment of society. Her highest aspiration is to not only live with absolute grace, harmony and wit, but to spread the display of these virtues through all social circles. Matters of base survival and practicalities bore and confuse her. She sees herself as above such venal concerns, which is why she picks with such care her retainers, not only for style, but for efficiency and the ability to cope that she lacks. When forced to deal with mundane details or harsh realities she often displays a dreaded lack of grace and tends to withdraw. Her skill in avoiding unpleasant conflicts is surpassed only by her ability to downplay the importance of such trifles.
Timeline
1495 - Born
Isabelle was born to the noble house of Duvain. For much of Isabelle's young life her elder brothers, Philip and Henri, were the focus of the family's attention. While they were trained respectively to rule and preach, Isabelle remained in the nursery, then the womens' quarters. Her father was rich enough to be greedy about breaking up the family fortune, but not rich enough to attract suitable suitors for his daughter. That is, until both Philip and Henri died untimely deaths. Isabelle was then thrust from her secluded existence into prominence as a valuable heiress.
1510 - Coming Out
Once her father realized her new worth, Isabelle was put on display as a winsome and wealthy prize. In the bloom of youth and rich to boot Isabelle was a sought after bride, but her father's greed once again over-ruled Isabelle's inclination towards marriage and family. She was kept "on the market" for many seasons with her father always pursuing a better match for her. In the meantime Isabelle came to realize her own worth, and not just as a vessel for a husband's seed. With her wealth and comeliness she came to know her power over mens' desires. She taunted her suitors ruthlessly, being especially coy and maidenly with the ones she knew her father had already decided against.
1515 - Recruited
It was during this time of power that Isabelle came to the attention of the powerful vampire Evangeline. Evangeline saw in her a woman of intelligence and self-knowledge. A woman not beaten and broken by the bonds of patriarchal dominance. An adult, not a girl, poised for breaking free, only needing being shown the way. Evangeline gained access to Isabelle by positioning herself as an elder aunt of the Duvain family. Evangeline courted Isabelle with whispers of freedom and power more desirable than any suitor's promise of love. Evangeline slowly introduced Isabelle to the nature of her immortality and after many years of trust finally offered that new life to Isabelle. Isabelle agreed.
1519 - Turned
The night before the solemn and crucial Rite of Ascension, during Isabelle's solitary vigil, a monstrous creature crept into Isabelle's chamber and ruthlessly and brutally turned her. Giving her the "gift" of immortality tainted by the bloodline of an ignoble savage. Realizing that the evil creature had used Isabelle to get at her, Evangeline still brought Isabelle into her House. Evangeline gifted her with the name Sabine.
Evangeline introduced Sabine to the power and responsibility of immortality. Evangeline's dream was to drag human society out of the dark ages and into a new dawn of enlightenment and culture. Together they worked towards the creation of the "courtly" system where brute strength and wealth were not the sole factors deciding influence. Style and grace became the guiding light of the French Renaissance -- led by Evangeline and Sabine's discerning example.
1570 - Patron Killed
By the height of the Renaissance, Evangeline and Sabine had risen to prominence in French society. So prominent were they that their old enemy, Ashild (Sabine's sire), returned to destroy what they had worked so hard to build. Ashild murdered Evangeline and left their work in shambles. Religious conflict now rocked society's foundation and the force of arms held more sway than a gentle lady's snide comment. The death of her patron sent Sabine into a dark depression. She withdrew from society and brooded on her fate in private.
1576 to 1580 - Enter Grace
Gertrude Grace Montmorency (age 16) entered Sabine's service. Sabine was soon intrigued by the dirty waif who so obviously had been raised in the fashion of the nobility. Gertrude endeavored with efficient and imperturbable grace to insinuate herself into Sabine's favor. Gertrude's efforts eventually brought Sabine out of the dark funk she had sunk into upon her mentor's death.
1580 to 1582 - Back to Her Old Self
In Gertrude, Sabine regained the immovable foundation that had been destroyed with her patron's death. Sabine returned to genteel pursuits and even began feeding again. Sabine chose several sturdy guardsmen to be her regular thralls and beguiled them into thinking they were her lovers. Soon after Gertrude brought the indiscrete nature of the guardsmen to Sabine's attention, and they were quickly done away with. Gertrude then suggested that Sabine focus her regard elsewhere by hosting a party on her estate, inviting her delicious young friends from Paris.
1582 - Enter Armand
The party brought Sabine fully back to her old self. During introductions the Baron of Anjou made a snide comment to Sabine, "so nice to see you back from the dead, unlike your mistress," chuckle chuckle. Gertrude immediately came to the verbal rescue, interrupting the scene to assure the Baron that his Mother's instructions as to his accommodations and schedule had been received and that all was in order. Gertrude went on to "remind" the Baron that it was his bedtime, and that "your mother was quite explicit, sir." The Baron retired amid amused titters by onlookers. Gertrude displayed initiative and wit in her dealings with the Baron and revealed that his chastisement was at the request of his Sire. Also attending the party were Sabine's fellow Guardians Gastone, Herbert, Norbert, and Gastone's childe Madeline.
During the party, Sabine was introduced to Duke Armand of Leon. The Duke began a concerted effort to woo and win Sabine. Sabine became enamoured of the Duke and made him her thrall. His devoted attention and romantic nature wooed her quite effectively. Gertrude, prompted perhaps by jealousy, revealed to Sabine that the Duke was possibly a Necromancer. Sabine assured Grace that she would proceed cautiously, then questioned Gastone and Norbert, but they were no help. Sabine finally asked Armand and he revealed that his deep dark secret was that he was raised a Huegonaut. Armand finally wooed Sabine to the point that she accepted his proposal of marriage, and that is when his true nature came out. Armand sprouted the fangs of a Guardian and revealed an aura of pure evil! Sabine was horrified that she had been fooled by a servant of the Dark One, a fallen Guardian! And even worse, she was entirely under his domination and could not act to defend herself. That was when Gastone and Herbert burst into the room and attacked Armand. He carelessly threw them off and gloated over Sabine. Gertrude, proclaiming viciously that he would never be master here, thrust a pike through his heart, beheaded him, disemboweled him and tossed his head and heart into the fire.
After this event Sabine found it advisable to formally ghoul Gertrude.
1600 - Grace the Guardian
Sabine brought Gertrude over in 1600 and gifted her with the name Grace, permanently banishing the use within the House of the horrid nickname Gertie.
1600 to 1642 - House Aureolus Renewed
With the rock-solid support of Grace, Sabine re-entered society and wrought many changes. She rallied the scattered and purposeless childer of her patron's House and brought them under her banner. Sabine maneuvered her way into the position of mistress to King Louis the 13th, the Wise. In this position she was able to mentor the King's son (born in 1638) and guide the monarchy, and thus the nation. Sabine's greatest achievement was the promotion and guidance of the reign of the glorious Sun King, Louis the 14th, whose reign began in 1642. Acting as mentor and favored "aunt", she even chose and instructed the King's mistresses, Sabine was the most powerful woman in the entire kingdom.
1646 to 1652 - Enter Jeremy
Soon after the beginning of the Sun King's reign, Sabine formed an attachment to a human named Jeremy Devereaux. He became her thrall and acted as her escort, then companion. He soon became so important to her that she brought him into the House as a ghoul. Jeremy's presence reduced Sabine's dependence on Grace as an advisor and companion, leaving Grace to pursue mainly domestic matters.
1652 - Jeremy the Betrayer
Sabine finally decided to make Jeremy a Guardian. In his new position he began taking on more and more responsibility within the House. So much so that it began to appear that he was in charge instead of Sabine. Realizing his presumption, Sabine, with the help of Grace, engineered a plot to trap Jeremy. A beautiful young virgin was brought into the household as Sabine's ward (Amanda). Jeremy could not resist and made her his thrall, violating the House rule that Grace must approve all thralls. Sabine firmly chastised Jeremy and asserted her ultimate and complete authority over the House. Several months later Jeremy ran off with the young girl and could not be found. Sabine declared Blood Hunt on Jeremy.
1715 to 1735 - Falling Out with Grace
The death of Louis and ascension of his no-so-glorious son was a blow to Sabine. By this time Sabine was forced to take on a new identity and was no longer able to influence the King. To make matters worse, Grace chose this time to turn paranoid and insist that Sabine consider the power of the peasants. Grace harangued Sabine endlessly with tales of doom. Her morbid fascination with the impossible concept of a commoner uprising became overwhelmingly tiresome until arguments, then resentful silence insued. Grace, frustrated and ignored, stormed out of Sabine's life.
The pain and chaos caused Grace's abandonment crept into Sabine's heart and festered, dimming her enjoyment of life. Sabine tried to overcompensate by goading her human puppets into feats of extreme decadence and debauchery. Sabine soon lost herself in the manic hedonism she herself had created.
1789 - French Revolution
Sabine's purposeful distraction was so deep that the French Revolution took her entirely by surprise. Grace returned in the nick of time to rescue Sabine from impending death. The destruction of all that Sabine had worked for her entire existence was a terrible and frustrating disappointment.
1832 - Refuge in Rogan's Court
Sabine's House took refuge in Rogan's Court. Rogan offered "protection" but Sabine declined and moved on.
1800's - America is the Place to Be
Sabine and Grace traveled through America.
1905 - Claim Tyrantship in San Francisco
