Fae World

The Fae world is still in development. But here's a taste...

The legends of Atlantis, Lyonness, and Avalon; mystical, magical, marvelous realms entwined with our own mundane lands. A catastrophe, sudden or slow, and the magical realm is gone away, its people scattered, lost or faded into nothingness.

Such a fate was for the land of Faerie.

Faerie and Shadow were once one land, the darkest dark and lightest light combined and entwined. The dark Fae and light Fae ruled over the world and created creatures to serve and amuse themselves. One of the creations of the Fae served up Faerie's destruction.

Humans, made to serve and please the Fae, using those attributes for which their makers most prized them, overturned the rule of the Fae, cleft the worlds into fragments and doomed the Fae.

Shadow, the home of the dark Fae, became the "real" world, the world of flesh and iron. The world of matter. Faerie, the home of the ligth Fae, was cut from the soil that its seeds of inspiration needed to flourish. Faerie, bereft of substance, faded away.

Those Fae that stayed in Faerie faded also, becoming echoes, wraiths, ghosts of times gone by. Some Fae clung to flesh and became trapped in Shadow. Tethered and bound to the basest form of their beings. Some dark Fae also faded, but most wove their own realm, the Depths. Clinging to Shadow like a leech, the Depths house the dark Fae in their mutated form, knarled and twisted, their evil souls displayed in their flesh. The denizens of the Depths hunt in Shadow when the veil between the worlds is thin. Faerie still exists, but it is an empty, haunted, lifeless place. It's glittering halls silent, it's forests frozen, it's very air as still as the grave. It's sky has no stars, fire has no heat, food and drink no substance. It is a land of shadows.

A Fae character is a spirit imperfectly tethered to mortal flesh. Their minds are sometimes fixed in "normal" time, and other times they are submerged in other whens and other selves. They live in a succession of bodies, living a normal mortal span, in a facsimile of a mundane life, or they hop from flesh to flesh as the whim takes them, or they favor a certain form and wear it for centuries, or most often a combination. Their minds ebb and flow, sometimes entirely losing all memories of their Fae past, other times dwelling in lost days forever.

The flow of game time is more like an episode of Highlander than a standard gaming session. Time is unstable. Characters will find themselves ranging back and forth in their history. Pursuing different goals, loves, enemies in different times. A character's history is not plotted out ahead of time. "Flashbacks" to past time are run and resolved as if their outcomes are not predetermined, as they are not! Details of a character's background will be created "on the fly" each time the story focuses on a different period. A character who begins with no knowledge of their Fae nature may end up discovering they were one of the great Fae warlords of the Shadow/Faerie wars, that they were muse to the great mortal thinkers of the Renaissance, that they have children and lovers and alliances made in other times, with those whom they travel as strangers in their first adventures.
