Paladins

Home

Paladins are the policemen of vampire society. Their mandate is to monitor, investigate and resolve. They are empowered by the vampire Lords and Tyrants to oversee vampire society and identify, uncover and adjudicate breaches of the Masquerade. There are 13 Paladins, each sponsored by a powerful vampire Lord.

History

The position of Paladin developed in Western Europe in the Middle Ages in response to the ravages of the Inquisition. The powerful vampire Lords of Europe agreed that, in order to survive, they must police their population and themselves and enforce the tennents of the newly formed Masquerade movement. The Lords and Tyrants agreed to cooperate with and be bound to the decisions of the Paladins. The number of Paladins has grown steadily over the ages, from their beginnning with just 6, to today's 13.

Basic Facts

There are 13 Paladins, each sponsored by one of the most powerful and popular vampire Lords. To become a Paladin sponsor a vampire Lord must be a consumate politician. Paladin sponsors are the most well-known, feared and respected vampire Lords in vampire society. The Paladins themselves are, once appointed, fully autonomous, but most maintain close ties and fealty to their sponsoring Lord. Paladins police their own ranks. If a Paladin goes rogue or if an Archon unlawfully proclaims themself a Paladin, the other Paladins hunt the malfecent down and destroy them.

The Making of a Paladin

The life of a Paladin is a dangerous one. They are continually placing themselves in the thick of plots and schemes with little or no backup. The final death, for themselves or their prey, is always a possible resolution to any mission. Paladins train their replacements long before they plan for retirement. Apprentice Paladins are called Archons. When a Paladin is slane or retires, they are usually replaced by their most senior or competent Archon. The Paladins as a whole decide who is to be the next Paladin, and they inform the sponsoring Lord as to who they have authorized to take the old Paladin's place. In many cases Paladins will keep their breatheren informed as to their Archons' progress and who they feel would best replace them should they fall. Lords who wish to become a sponsor of a new or replacement Paladin must inform the Paladins and wait for their decision. A raising in the number of Paladins is done very rarely and usually only in response to an increased or expanded vampire population.
